Assisted Research Day at the LDS Family History Library

Experienced JGSLA mentors will be on-hand to help members get the most out of the Center’s resources, providing one-on-one computer assistance with many of the popular online genealogical databases including JewishGen, Ancestry.com, and Heritage Quest. The Center’s extensive collection of maps and gazetteers, U.S. census and vital records, naturalization and passport application indexes, city directories, passenger arrival lists, and international census and vital records will be available. Remember to bring your family trees and research materials with you. If you want to download electronic images of microfilm documents, bring a flash drive.

We are also offering two research classes and one film:

1:15 – 2:15 p.m. – Introduction to the Family History Library

Barbara Algaze, JGSLA Librarian, will explain the resources of the Center and how to use their census and naturalization microfilms and fiches, city directories and more. A great start for members new to the library, but experienced genealogists will discover surprising tips and creative hints to enhance their research.

2:30 – 4:00 p.m. - Introduction to Internet Genealogy

Online research is an important component of genealogy. JGSLA board member, author and genealogy speaker, Arnie Schwartz will offer 38 easy ways to learn more about your relatives in this condensed version of his six-hour “Beginning Genealogy Workshop.” Internet sleuthing techniques will be covered along with tips on how to obtain copies of early documents by mail.

A 176 page tutorial workbook, written for the visual learner, will be for sale at this meeting for $20. (Also available by mail for a $3 shipping.)

4:40 – 5:00 p.m. – Film - Past Lives: The Stanley Diamond Story

The quest of Canadian genealogist Stan Diamond, to reconstruct his family in order to solve a genetic medical mystery led to the creation of the largest index in the world of specifically Jewish vital Records – Jewish Records Indexing - Poland. This database has helped countless researchers discover their roots and has reunited families separated for decades because of the Holocaust. Stan Diamond’s dedication and perseverance, as portrayed in this documentary, has lead to incredible benefits for all researchers.

Important: Only members whose dues are current may participate. If you have not yet renewed, you can do so at the door. New members are welcome to join the society and participate as well. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend who would like to get started or to accelerate their research.
