The Lost World of Trochenbrod

The novel, “Everything is Illuminated,” by Jonathan Safran Foer, touched an emotional cord with Jewish genealogists worldwide. The film adaptation, a few years later, offered a mystical version of events gone awry when one travels to an ancestral shtetl in search of a lost world. Now, in 2010, filmmaker Jeremy Goldscheider is producing "Trochenbrod," a feature length documentary that takes us back to Western Ukraine, where the very real town of Trochenbrod once stood. This historically unique, isolated all-Jewish farming colony of 5,000 people was eradicated by the Nazis in 1942. Only 33 inhabitants escaped the massacre. The film accompanies a group of survivors and 70 descendants from the United States, Israel, Ukraine, Canada, and Brazil as they journey back to memorialize their former home. Goldscheider will show clips from his work-in-progress and discuss the journey, film, and renewed interest in Trochenbrod.

Venue Tour

At the end of Goldscheider's presentation you can take a short tour of the conference facilities. Program will run from 2:00PM – 4:00PM.

Speaker
Jeremy Goldscheider

Jeremy Goldscheider began his career producing music videos and documentaries for major recording and in 1999 created Esonic, Inc., a multi-media advertising agency. In 2004 Goldscheider turned his attention to producing original television and film content for BBC America's "Click Online", MTV's "Label Block," Animal Planet's "Working," and most recently "Venice High" for NBC/Universal. His award winning short film, "Tel Aviv" continues to play internationally. Through his partnership film company, Kihou Productions Inc., he is currently producing "PABLO," an animated feature documentary starring Jeff Bridges due out in 2011. For the past twelve years Jeremy has worked extensively with the Jewish community producing fundraising and promotional films in the U.S. and Israel. Goldscheider is a fourth-generation Trochenbroder and this film will be a mixed media feature film utilizing original animation and contemporary documentary footage to relate the compelling tale. Both “PABLO” and “Trochenbrod” are part of an emerging new genre that is redefining non-fictional storytelling.

Trochenbrod

Note: The film's co-producer Avrom Bendavid-Val will join Goldscheider this summer at the national IAJGS convention, where Bendavid-Val will present a visual history of Trochenbrod and discuss his book "The Heavens are Empty: Discovering the Lost Town of Trochenbrod" to be released by Pegasus Books in fall 2010.
